Early in the morning on a rainy Day in October
i met parts of the Members of the FREIFUNK-Initiative in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
The Team: Mr. Zachler, Philipp, Daniel,
Crimp-King Ulf*, Max, Alex, Sebastian and Rapha!
Wiki: FREIFUNK is a non-commercial open Grassroots initiative
to support free radio networks in the German region.
Freifunk is part of the international movement for open wireless radio networks.
The main goals of freifunk are to build a network that is decentralized,
owned by those who run it and to support local communication.
Anonymity is a Keystone to minimise the Risk of unwanted monitoring.
The initiative is free from discrimination,
in the sense of net neutrality.
Best Spots for building Freifunk-Antennas
are very high Buildings to maximise the Range of the Signals.
On the Roof of the City Hall in Kreuzberg 61 (Mehringdamm)
the FREIFUNK-Crew set up 14 Router / Antennas.
6 Dish-Antennas to communicate with other Freifunk-Networks
in up to 5 kilometer distance (ZOO-Fenster, Rathaus-Neukölln, Emmaus-Church etc).
More or less 250 Meters of Network-Cable
had been used on that Spot.
In order to extend the FREIFUNK-Network
its necessary that politics play along and grant access to high City-Buildings.
Also (YOUR !!) private Households are needed
to place FREIFUNK-Routers on their windowsill or balconies
and to provide free WIFI to their Neighbours.
Since that Day the District Kreuzberg 61 has free WIFI
all around the RATHAUS on York Strasse.
Please visit the FREIFUNK-WEBSITE for further Infos on how to participate (Twitter / Facebook).
You can also check if there´s a free WIFI around your Home. Share your own Internet-Connection with your Neighbours.
